I'm trying to make a pad that will appear on the bottom of the PCB only, no hole, and no other stuff (silk, masks, etc kind of like a SMD device).

I make a "shape" in pattern editor, and save it, then go into component editor to make the actual component (add connection pin) when in the "attached pattern" dialog I can click on the pin but cannot make the connection to the pad shape, what am I doing wrong? (I want to make my own, and learn the software)

The PCB I'm working on needs a few extra pads (on the bottom only) for connectivity "after-the-fact".

It looks like you do not have pad in the pattern. Shape isn't pad. So place pad in the pattern or convert the shape to pad (shape must be on signal layer, then right click on it and choose "Convert to pad").

I don't seem to have "Convert To Pad" in my right-click context menu.

From the toolbar which makes shapes, I selected "Signal" from the drop-box, then selected the "elipse" tool, draw the shape, then when I right-click the new shape, the only things I have on my context menu are:

Lock Selected
Rotate
Cut
Copy
Delete
Propertys

Alternatively, is there a way to place a normal "pad" and then delete the hole and top layer?

Drawing a shape (polygon) and converting it to a pad are used if one wants to get complex pad. If you need simple pad, there is the "place pad" button on elements panel. Pads can be either through-hole or surface, open pad properties and choose its type and sizes.

You can find more info in DipTrace tutorial.

Reading all the tutorial may be useful too.

Note that you can only make a "convert to pad" to a polygon shape in Pattern Editor! Right click on the border of the shape and you will see. For elipse pads click on place pad and change it overwriting the patterns pad properties dialog.

Why don't you simply use "Surface" instead of "Through-Hole" pads? There aren't any hole in a surface (= SMD) pad.
