I have a schematic and PCB for a product we have been making for a while. After the PCB was in production I cleaned up the schematic to prepare it for insertion on the product manual. It was spread over 5 sheets. I noticed that two of the sheets were less than half full, so I moved the contents of one sheet to another sheet, reducing the 5 sheets to 4, but did not change anything as far as the connections on either of the sheets.

Now several months later I need to make a minor update to the schematic and board to add half a dozen parts. I made the necessary corrections to the schematic, but when I went to the PCB layout and attempted to "renew design from schematic", all of the parts that got moved from one sheet to another several months ago show up outside the board outline as if they were new parts. I really want the PCB to stay exactly as it was except for these half a dozen parts I need to add. How can I recover from this situation? I don't think I have a copy of the schematic before moving the parts to another sheet.

Thanks for any guidance on this.

-Rick

Hi Rick,

Please compare reference designators of components in Schematic and PCB. Change them if necessary. Then renew layout from schematic by RefDes.

Thanks for the suggestion, Alex. That fixed the problem. I had not noticed that the RefDes had changed when I moved part of the schematic to a different sheet.

FYI- for each component where I had to put the RefDes back the way it was originally, the Schematic editor would warn me that another component with the same RefDes already existed, even though a search for the other RefDes turned up empty.

All OK now though. Thanks again.
