The transition is safe. The last version works with all custom libraries and existing designs that were created in the early versions.

I tried an import but the none of the part symbols are showing, just a bunch of pins.

Double-clicking will only highlight a component, with no selection.
The properties will pop up when the component is selected. That's how it was originally done.

This means:
in Schematic - there is a component with RefDes=BIU1, Name=PDC04146P00
in PCB Layout - there is a component with RefDes=BIU1, Name=5650861-5
Look at the component context menu - Properties - Parameters - Name field.
