Can I, should I, add DIP sockets to my library?

I'm new to schematic capture. Since I want my sockets to appear in my BOM, can I add them on the schematic? I also want to be sure any placement conflicts are resolved, due to their size (sockets are larger than the ICs).

You can add an additional field in properties of a component that will be plugged into the socket. The field should have information about the socket (part number for example). When you export BOM you can include additional fields beside standard ones. In result, your BOM will have information about IC and socket in one row.
