Marking rotation in 4.0

#1 Post by rea5245 » 19 Jun 2020, 11:07

Hi,

I've upgraded to 4.0. In PCB Layout, when I rotate a component, the markings (i.e. labels) rotate too. This is different from 3.x, where markings remained right-side-up.

Is there a way to get all the markings to be oriented the same way? Right now, it's a mess with some right side up, some upside down, and vertical markings have some with their tops to the left, others with their tops to the right.

Thank you,
Bob

Press F10, select a marking and hold left mouse button pressed, press R or Space to rotate it as you want and release left button. Then select another marking and so on. When you finish press F10 again to return to default mode.

Thanks, but my concern is that DipTrace is rotating the text in the first place. I think there should be a "bottom" of the board, and no matter how you rotate a component, its markings should stay either right-side up or, if the text is on the side of a component, rotated 90 degrees. DipTrace should never automatically rotate the text to be upside-down or -90 degrees. People normally want their text to be in the same orientation almost all the time, so that should be the default. Then, on the rare occasions when someone wants text not to be right-side up, they can manually rotate it as you described.

I second Alex's comments. This is not the expected or desired behavior. It is not how DipTrace has worked for the 10 years that I have been using it. If the label is on the top, and I rotate the part, I literally never want the label to move to the bottom and be upside-down. This change has just added hours to every board layout, just to clean up the labels that used to work fine.

I can confirm this behavior as of 8/19/20.

I've been using Diptrace 3 for a while now. Just checking out the free version 4.0.0.5 which will load most of my projects. This seems like a major annoyance, surely this can't be intentional.

Why on earth would anyone ever want parts markings upside down??? I know you can correct this every time it happens by then rotating the marking but its a pain. It used to work fine, now its broken IMHO. Every time I start version 3 it nags me to upgrade. I think I'll wait a bit for things to settle down.

I agree as well! Just come to do my first board layout in 4.0 and this is a massive pain!

In fact...Although I love some of the new features, this is probably enough of a problem to make me roll back to version 3.0

This is the primary reason I haven't upgraded to 4.0.

Yes, I've held off for this reason as well.

This problem has been solved.
The checkbox "Rotate Marking with Component" was added in main menu View - Component Markings.
The option will be available in the next update.
