min ring

#1 Post by arielberschadsky » 20 Mar 2023, 18:19

What does the DRC Error "Min Ring" mean? Also, is there a reference guide that explains all possible error messages? I've checked the Diptrace Tutorial but it does not mention "Min Ring." My error message says: "Min ring (W=0.08 mm; Rule=0.127 mm). I have no idea what this means, or how to fix it.

...What does the DRC Error "Min Ring" mean?...
It refers to the minimum allowed width of the pad's ring, or "donut", that surrounds a plated-through hole. See this link for an explanation of annular rings - https://www.protoexpress.com/blog/dont- ... you-crazy/
This particular rule can be set up in the Design Rules dialog window (main menu > Verification > Design Rules...) under the [Sizes] tab...

The "Min ring (W=0.08 mm; Rule=0.127 mm)" message means a ring width of 0.08 mm was detected where the minimum required ring width (according to the Design Rules setting) is 0.127 mm.
Check with your board house (PCB manufacturer) to see what their minimum requirements are then, if necessary, change your rules to meet or exceed them and correct anything that doesn't meet those rules.

Resurrecting this thread, I have two schematics/PCB layouts of different circuits, both using a TO92 2N3904 and [presumably] the same rules, yet when that component is placed onto PCB layout "A" there is no problem. However, when the same component from the same library is placed onto layout "B", all three holes get the dreaded "min ring" of death error.

Double-checked the rules and they're identical.

Glad to provide info and grateful for help/advice.

Out of curiosity, what happens when 0.001mm is subtracted from the "Ring Size:" rule setting (main menu > Verification > Design Rules... > [Sizes]) for the offending PCB?

Tom,

If you're asking me, I neglected to check back here after my question took so long to post. (I am a rookie.) I believe the problem was in my changing components and patterns in my personal library. (Again, I am just starting out here.) The offending component had a TO-92 pattern that conflicted with my previouse .dip PCB. I updated the pattern lib, component lib, and "Replaced Component and all is well.

Sorry for the delay in response and thank you.
