Differential pair trick

#1 Post by EEnh » 17 May 2013, 22:44

I hope Alex and his associates can add support for differential pairs sometime soon. Until then, here's a trick I used this evening:

1. set the grid to an integral fraction of the diff pair spacing you need and fine enough to land on the pads of the IC or connector you're terminating on.

That was easy. The hard part is when you have to route in a non-orthogonal direction.

2. manually route a trace segment that follows the path you need and of a width equal to the trace spacing you need

3. set the grid to a very fine value, zoom in and move your diff pairs until they just touch this segment, using it as a guide

4. delete the segment you used as a spacing guide.

You can get perfect spacing on the angled route and the orthogonal routes this way.

Ah thanks for the trick! Used it to route a number of differential pairs, though it's pretty tedious.
Hopefully real support can be added soon.
