Creating hires renders of top/bottom view

#1 Post by 0xdeadbeef » 01 Sep 2021, 10:06

For documentations, presentations and reviews it would be sometimes nice to be able to create hires renderings of the top and bottom view of a PCB.

Now, at the moment, there is only the way to make a screenshot of the 3D view, but this is not really satisfying for larger PCBs. As the resolution is limited by the screen resolution and view size, the screenshots come out pixelated which makes the smaller silkscreen text barely readable.

Besides, it seems somewhat impossible to get a straight/plain view that is not slightly rotated and/or tilted. For whatever reason, the default (at the beginning of after pressing "Reset View") doesn't seem to use 0° for the three angles, so the view is always slightly rotated and due to the coarse rotation steps and the lack of numerical inputs, it's impossible to completely fix this.

In a nutshell, it would be nice to have an option to export a flat, hires, bitmap of the top and bottom view. E.g. it would suffice to add a button in the 3D view which lets you select the bitmap size and then saves flat views in an appropriate format (preferably PNG). Since rendering speed is not an issue, the rendering options could be cranked up a notch to get the best possible (anti-aliased and what not) view.

Thank you for the suggestion, we will consider exporting hi-res image from 3D preview.

Thanks for considering!
Just to be sure: please also consider the "flat/plain" part of the request, though.
Maybe, as a first step, it would help to really use 0° angles as default - which (for whatever reason) isn't the case yet.

For the time being, I'm using this site to create Hires renderings of the PCB from the gerbers. The only drawbacks are that you need to create the gerbers and that you can't directly export PNG.Visual quality is pretty much what I was looking for though.
