use of large modern screens

#1 Post by Fenichel » 10 Mar 2012, 18:26

Diptrace fails to take advantage of the large screen areas that are increasingly available. Some dialog boxes use pull-down lists where the full list is short, and could easily be displayed in full. Many dialog boxes cannot be dragged to enlarge them. The library list in the schematic-capture program has a fixed width of 730 pixels or so, so I still have to use the irritating little drop-down scroll bar, even when I've spread the Diptrace window across 5000 pixels of my screens. There are many other examples.

This, bigger dialog windows with less clicking and tabs.
My rhombicosidodecahedron is bigger than yours.

There are cases of the opposite as well. On my laptop, which has a 1366x768 small screen, some of the dialogs regarding 3D preview are too big, meaning the OK button (I'm not on my laptop right now) is almost unreachable. I think it's the "assign 3D model to part" dialog. This request could be just more dynamic resizing in general!

Another problem related to large screens is that the grid becomes difficult to discern when individual pixels are very small. Possible solutions are
  • parameter to set spot size of grid (1x1, 2x2, etc.)
  • optional presentation of grid as hatchwork of lines instead of array of points

I agree with Fenichel. Grid dots disappear at high zoom levels (1920x1200). They are too small to see.
CorelDraw allows selection of dots or lines for grid (menu graphic attached). By selecting lines you can always see the grid at high zoom. DT should have separate settings for snap to grid ON/OFF and display grid ON/OFF like CorelDraw does. That way you can turn off snap yet still see guidelines.
