Sub-assembly components

#1 Post by sampattemore » 12 May 2025, 21:53

Hi, I have spent many hours trying to do something that I am sure must be possible.

I often create mother boards and daughter boards. They typically connect to each other with a mezzanine connector and several screws studs.

The daughter board would have for example a male mezzanine connector on the bottom and 4 mounting holes
The mother board would need a female mezzanine connector on the top and 4 studs installed.

I have built "components" for my various daughter boards so that I can place them on my motherboard schematic and connect up the mezzanine pins and ground the studs.

When I build the layout, the "component" for the daughter board is a perfect landing pad for the daughter board and I can place it where I want on the motherboard.

The problem?
when I make a BOM the landing pad component for the daughter boards is a single component that shouldn't be in an assembly BOM, and it represents several components that should be in the BOM (the mezzanine connector and the studs/standoffs)

It would be much better if the landing pad component was actually a composite of several components (the mezzanine connector and the studs/standoffs)

a single mother board might have say 10 daughter boards and I design these regularly so it will save me many hours and mistakes if we can figure this one out.

In order to get correct BOM and Pick and Place files, it would be better to have mezzanine connector and studs separately instead the composite component. Further in PCB Layout you can group them to operate with items as a whole.
