Pattern with square hole pad

#1 Post by ramon73 » 28 Feb 2025, 11:05

Hi, I am trying to make the Albright PC60A contactor pattern and I need to make a pad with a square hole and I really don't know how to do it.
I have tried to make a smd pad with a cutout in the board for the hole, but I get DRC errors. any suggestions on how it is possible to do it?

70mil x 70 mil square holes per the drawing. Does not specify a corner radius, so not sure how you would have this fabbed by your PCB vendor?
Milled and then hand filed? Punched? How do you plan to build the PCB and how thick is it?
Personally I would just oversize to round holes such that the 70mil-- square posts just fit in the hole with a light pressfit.
Pythagoras tells me that would be a 99mil diameter hole, so I would just go with 100mil hole size as slightly oversize, or 90-95mil if you want a tighter fit.

Thank you for your reply.
Actually the square holes are 1,7x1,7mm. I have indeed thought of making round holes of 2.4mm diameter, but considering that the datasheet specifically indicates square holes and that it is a contactor for 80A my doubt is if it will work.

Well the data sheet shows the holes as: 1.7x1.7[0.07x0.07] which I took to mean 70mils square, based on standard terminology.

The biggest problem is you need to figure out how your PCB vendor is going to fabricate those holes, by what process. Punching, milling, drilling, whatever.

Then you can decide what to put on the shape in the drawing as to the hole definition.

Yes, I'll ask the pcbs supplier. Anyway, the question was how to make a pad with a square hole in Diptrace. I guess if the hole is milled then the hole will not be copper plated. Thanks!.
